When the landscape sinks into a thick layer of powdered sugar, most people are delighted to see it. Because the pure white of the snow makes the surroundings appear absolutely peaceful in winter. If you live in a region where it rarely snows, you will probably want to photograph this white-glittering natural spectacle.
Taking photos in winter
If you then look at the snow-covered landscape on the photos, it can be that they look a bit boring. Somehow something is missing, such as the green of leaves, the paths and also the meadows seem to have disappeared. The whole landscape suddenly appears less colorful. You can avoid this, however, if you look for a few markers in the backdrop, such as trees, large shrubs or fences.
Everything fits in this photo. The trees and fences cast a contrasting shadow and the low sun ensures that the white snow is not overexposed.
White is not always white
The snow photos often fail because of the wrong exposure. The extreme light conditions in the photos often give snow a slight bluish tint or look gray. Your exposure should therefore be so bright that the details in the bright areas are barely visible when you zoom in. Snow and ice photos in particular benefit when they are taken in RAW format. You can optimize the exposure in post-processing in the RAW converter and darken overexposed areas.
Due to the fact that the light of the sun shines more easily through the trees in winter, there are exciting contrasts with which you can play wonderfully photographically. If you shoot the scene from a slightly elevated position, the branches cast clear shadows on the snow, which can trigger interesting effects, especially with black and white photos.
Right in the middle of magical snowfall
Since the lighting conditions tend to be darker when snowflakes are falling, the camera automatically triggers the flash if set. However, the flash only illuminates the flakes in the immediate vicinity. If you choose a longer exposure time without a flash, the camera has enough time to capture the light. The falling flakes leave white stripes, which is an absolutely nice side effect.
Now you have got a few tips on how to take the most beautiful photos in winter when it is snowing. Of course, you don’t want to archive the images on the hard drive and then forget them. The best way to look at the great photos again and again is and remains the conventional photo album in paper form.
