Each type of plant has its own characteristics and this also applies to the issues of repotting. However, there are some general tips that are always valid. Especially now, in spring, people are very interested in how to properly repot their own flowers. These are developing very strongly in the current season. As a rule, one would like to multiply them in order to then distribute them in different rooms, as well as on the balcony and terrace. Repotting is also very important due to the nutrients in the potting soil. If it is not replaced for too long, it will become very poor in nutrients. So let us tell you the most important rules.

When should you repot the flowers?
In general, the flowers should be repotted between February and April. Most species are in this period just before their magnificent flowering period. Of course, this is a guideline and not a compulsion. Basically, it is best to repot the plants when they are not flowering. In addition, their age is of crucial importance. The perennial flowers should be transplanted annually for the first three years. After that, the periods between changing the flower pots or the soil should be extended. Older flowers could be repotted every 3-4 years.

How do we know when it’s time to repot the plants?
As just explained, the timing guideline for transplanting the flowers into another plant container is insufficient. Sometimes you have to do something at a different time of the year. But how do you know that the time is ripe for this? Below is our list of characteristics that you must repot the flowers:
- The plant is too big for the flower pot;
- Despite regular watering, the flowers do not develop as desired.
- It becomes visible that the roots are too big for the selected flower pot.
- The earth looks old and overly dry.
- Plants stop growing and flowers appear before their time.

Let’s assume it’s time to repot the flowers. How exactly do you do that? Take the flowers out of the flower pot carefully so as not to damage the root system. Remove the dried and rotten outgrowths. Use a suitable garden tool for cutting if the plant parts to be removed do not fall off by themselves.
Measure this out in some way. There should be a distance of about 5-10 cm between the edges of the flower pot and the roots themselves. In some cases, there is no need to change the flower pot as there is still enough space inside for the flowers. In this case, you should free the roots of the plant from the soil. Put a drainage layer (in a moment it will be explained how). Then fill the flower pot with soil again and put the plant in there. If you do need a larger flower pot, just take one and fill it with a drainage layer and soil. Then you can put the flowers you have chosen there and fill the flower pot with soil.
Danger: Do not fill the flower pot to the top, because you need space for watering!

You should think about the drainage of the flower pot, because this is the first layer that is spread on the bottom of the flower pot. Suitable materials include coarse sand, small pieces of brick or brick powder.

Many mistakenly believe that fertilizing at this stage is very good for plants. When repotting, the flower is very stressed anyway. Fertilizing at this point can do more harm than good. Then the flowers need about a month to adapt to the new soil. Then you can also fertilize them, although this is by no means necessary for every species.
Tip against pests: To ensure that the new soil does not contain any pests, you should leave it at a temperature of 200 degrees for about 30 minutes. This “baking” should be enough to expel parasites. Of course, only plant the plants in the soil after it has cooled down.
