imp what? What’s the deal with the gnome door?

Of the custom of the gnome door comes from Scandinavia. On the 1st Advent, a little gnome moves in with the families. This can be recognized by an elf door that appears one morning on the wall at floor level.

Some Imp Doors appear at the end of November and are identified by a construction site sign. Something is happening here!

It all starts with the gnome door. Everyone decides for themselves what happens around them. Table, bench, chairs, houses, garden, forest, kitchen, fireplace… everything is possible!

What is the gnome doing?

the imp sweetens the Advent season for the children. He is only active at night. Whenever the children get up in the morning, they find one Letter from the imp.

Sometimes the gnome tells what he is doing or planning to do. Maybe he even has cookie baked or something crafted.

Again and again he gives the children small ones tasks or puts Questions. Every now and then he also hides a small one gifte.g. a candy, sticker, bouncy ball or similar.

They are very surprising and wonderfully entertaining elf pranks! Sometimes the gnome does weird things. Mustard instead of toothpaste, he hides all socks or puts peas in the lunch box…

On Christmas Eve the gnome bids farewell until next year.

At first glance, that sounds like a lot of work: write a letter every day and think about what the gnome will do. But don’t worry, we’ve prepared something for you:

Print out the schedule. It describes for each day what the gnome does, what is required and what has to be done at the gnome door.

Actions of the gnome can also be easily transferred to family life: handicrafts, writing a letter to grandma, reading instead of watching TV, cleaning up the room…

For whom is the Wichteltür suitable?

For Kindergarten and primary school children is the gnome magic certainly the most suitable. From my own experience, however, I can say that even older children, who naturally see through the game, rush to the door in the morning and discover what’s new, completely fascinated.

I can also well imagine that Imp in the elderly brings joy to the Advent season. Maybe he only appears every other day or brings letters on the Sunday of Advent…

Everyone who saw our little gnome world in real life was fascinated by it and enjoyed the small details.

Decoration tip: The gnome house or the gnome door can also be perfectly illuminated. Looks nice for Christmas and is a great decorative element in the living room.

Simply stick spacers, eg made of cardboard or wood, on the back and attach a battery-operated chain of lights. Put it against the wall, switch it on, be happy.

Make gnome door and accessories

Many craft ideas can be realized for the gnome magic: From the door to the house to pastries made of salt dough or stars made of glitter paper. There’s plenty of inspiration on Pinterest.

I made the carpet in front of the fireplace myself. Simply cut out a piece of cardboard and glue wool or thick twine all around with hot glue.

Elf magic and advent calendar – how does that fit together?

Advent calendars and gnome magic go very well together! In the best case, they are coordinated with each other.

In the calendar can Little things for the gnome home be included that complement the children. Conversely, the gnome can also point out things in the calendar and, for example, ask him to give him a piece of chocolate.

Advent calendars and gnome doors can also be used separated from each other sweeten the Christmas season. Anything that is fun is allowed!
