Children are a real joy and you can almost watch them grow. Of course it is nice to be able to observe the development of the little ones. They learn first words, crawling and finally walking. And this is exactly where we want to build on, because: What do children need when they learn to walk and have finally learned it? That’s right, children’s shoes!
And since you only want the best for your offspring, you should also find out more about buying children’s shoes.
The topic of “buying children’s shoes” will now haunt you for quite a while anyway, since the little ones and their feet grow so fast that you can hardly keep up.
Then why not deal with it extensively? Do you know what to look out for when buying children’s shoes? This is exactly where we come in again, because that is exactly what we would like to bring you closer to in this article! So if you have the exact same questions, stay tuned now and read on!
Can you go wrong when buying children’s shoes?
Yes you can. Because if you don’t observe a few criteria, walking can become a real torture for your child.
Shoes that are too small, for example, can crush the child’s foot.
You probably know that feeling when you try on the wrong size shoe in a shoe store. At the latest when you get up and have walked two meters, you realize how uncomfortable running is and how much pain it can cause. This is no different with delicate children’s feet.
Since these continue to grow, shoes that are too small can even lead to deformities in the feet.
Now think about shoes that are too big. They don’t provide any support while running and are more of a hindrance than a help. Since children love to romp and play, they would lose their shoes all the time.
The right size of the children’s shoe alone is already a very decisive criterion of many that you should consider when buying.
You should consider these criteria when buying children’s shoes
First of all, pediatricians advise that children should be put on shoes with sturdy soles as late as possible. So when it’s warm in summer, shoes with firm soles are not absolutely necessary for small children. Running barefoot works better and they have more time to develop unhindered. When the children are about one year old, you can slowly start dealing with the subject of children’s shoes.
But if sturdy shoes are necessary, the following criteria come into play that you should consider.
But before that, here’s a little hint:
Of course it’s nice when the child really likes their new shoe. But not every shoe that the child likes is the right one for their foot. So don’t just let your offspring’s taste guide you when it comes to choosing new children’s shoes. In case of doubt, the shoes that you have carefully checked and selected are better for your child than those that your child chose based on their appearance. Nevertheless, you should take the wishes of your offspring seriously, otherwise they will not be happy and wear the shoe reluctantly. A child-friendly closure is just as important as the right color of the shoe model.
The right shoe size: Not too small and not too big
As already mentioned, the right size of the new children’s shoe is crucial. To do this, first measure your child’s foot precisely.
Unfortunately, shoe sizes for children’s shoes are not as consistent as one would like, so you should not simply rely on the size given by the shoe manufacturer. Children’s feet need enough space in the shoe, because the little ones don’t yet feel whether a shoe fits them. To ensure this, check each shoe for 12-18mm space between the big toe and the toe of the shoe. Only then can optimal wearing comfort be guaranteed.
Children’s feet grow quickly, so you should measure them regularly. About every three months it’s time to pull out the measuring device again and check the foot size. During this period, children can have growth spurts, which of course also affect the feet. Not only the length of the foot is crucial, but also the width.
It is also helpful to postpone both the measurement and the purchase of the shoes until the evening. Because as the day progresses, children’s feet can get a little thicker and you want to be on the safe side after all.
The right materials
Children’s shoes should generally be light, flexible and elastic so that they can optimally support the child’s walking process. Such a children’s shoe should also be air-permeable and water-repellent, so that the child’s foot can breathe and is protected from moisture at the same time. In addition, the soles of the shoes should be as non-slip as possible and heels have absolutely nothing to do with children’s shoes!
Leather, for example, is ideal because it combines all of these components and also looks pretty chic. Of course, there are other materials that work just as well. High-quality materials pay off the most because they have a longer service life and therefore remain beautiful for longer.
A minimum equipment is required
One pair of shoes for every season is enough?
No, because children’s feet sweat more than adult feet. Therefore, the shoes must be aired and dried regularly before your child can use them again.
In order for a shoe to maintain its optimal climate, it needs a little break to breathe deeply. For each season, your child should therefore have at least two pairs of shoes that they can switch back and forth between.
A no-go: used shoes
Of course, used children’s shoes can still look good and serve their purpose. Or maybe not? Children’s feet and shoes lead a kind of symbiotic relationship with each other. The child’s foot adapts to the shoe to a certain extent, but the shoe also adapts to the child’s foot the other way round. If you now put someone else’s foot in a shoe that has already been worn, the child’s foot can still adapt to the shoe. However, it is no longer possible the other way around and that is exactly what is fatal for your child’s foot.
We therefore strongly advise against dressing your child in used shoes and instead spending a little more money on new, high-quality shoes that your child can feel comfortable in.
