From mid-August the time has come in all German federal states: school enrollment is coming up. This is a very emotional event for everyone involved, because as a school child a new phase begins in the child’s life – and a lot also changes for the proud parents. In addition to mom and dad, siblings, grandparents and family friends often come to the ceremony to experience and celebrate this milestone together.
School enrollment usually begins with a speech by the school principal in the auditorium, the gym or in the playground, after which the first graders go into the classroom with the teacher and get a taste of the new everyday life that is now beginning for half an hour. Many parents’ councils have organized a school photographer in advance to take a first group photo with a school cone as a lifelong memory. Finally first graders – among the anticipation and excitement for many children there is understandably respect for the still unknown phase of life and all the exciting things that need to be learned now. And the moms and dads are also excited and want the first day of school to be a complete success for their little girl or boy. After all, the transition from daycare child to school child is something really big, especially for the little ones. Everything should be right and feel good. In addition to organizing the location for lunch and the bulging school bag, many moms ask themselves: What am I going to wear?
School enrollment outfits – mom’s style for the special day
Neither overdressed nor underdressed – the art of your school day outfit lies in the successful balance of honoring the occasion without being overly styled. In order to be appropriately dressed as a mother on the first day of school, it is worth taking a closer look at the circumstances: State schools, private schools or a renowned boarding school rarely have a glamorous atmosphere. Schools are pragmatically and functionally equipped. In addition, school enrollment takes place in the morning and the family usually goes out for lunch afterwards. Extremely festive clothing and high heels are therefore out of the question. Since it is not a business appointment, classic trouser suits or suits are usually a bit too formal – apart from an explicitly requested dress code. The same applies to the opposite: an easy-going look with leggings and a hoodie plus sneakers would definitely be too relaxed!
Tip: If your child will be attending an exclusive private school with, for example, a school uniform, we recommend asking in advance about the desired dress code.
Your child is the focus – for you: casual elegance
Let’s be clear again – on school day it’s all about the little ones. This doesn’t just apply to the celebration itself: the daughter or son will be the focus of all photos. On this occasion, as a mother, you will communicate a lot, with teachers, other parents and the school principal. The important thing is that you feel completely comfortable, are flexible and can hold your child in your arms if the worst comes to the worst without anything slipping or having to worry about your clothes.
Tip: The date of the school enrollment ceremony provides guidance for the dress code: Does it take place during the week or on the weekend?
This is how the school day outfit for mom works – general tips
The basic principle is: Dress like you would go to a family celebration in a restaurant or a big birthday party. A midi dress with a floral print combined with wedges or ballet flats is a good choice. If it is already cooler – especially in early autumn – combine a long blazer with the ensemble.
You can just as easily opt for a knee-length skirt or a midi skirt with a shirt, blouse or light sweater as a team. Stay away from minis that are too tight – the constant switching between sitting and standing becomes stressful. Who wants to have to constantly adjust their outfit when they start school? The situation is similar with skin-tight or strikingly cleavage looks. Better save these for a nice evening for two.
You can also look impressive in trousers or jumpsuits – flowing one-piece suits, worn with sneakers, fit perfectly and give you the freedom of movement you need. Loose trousers or classic chinos also work well and don’t restrict you. The evergreen: High-cut jeans with wider legs and a classy blouse fit into the (school) image. Mules round off your look in style.
If it is a very prestigious school with an extensive festive ceremony on the weekend, a dress code is usually specified. Here you can choose, for example, an elegant sheath dress or a two-piece trouser suit with pumps.

Happy and light: color and prints
The occasion is positive and forward-looking. In addition, school starts in summer or early autumn – so your outfit as a mom can be colorful. Floral or paisley prints and pastel tones or even strong nuances like turquoise blue or yellow are ideal. Overly extravagant patterns or neon tones should be left in the closet on this wear. But more subtle, monochrome pieces in gray or blue are also absolutely trendy.
All-rounder: shoes
The motto is: comfortable and well-groomed. Depending on the school and campus, you will walk a certain distance that day or possibly stand outside or in the auditorium. You’re on the safe side with sneakers or ballerinas. If you want to dress up your outfit a bit, wedges are comfortable companions. If school starts on a cool, rainy day, ankle boots or flat leather boots are a good option. A clear no-go: extreme high heels.
No Chi Chi: Accessories & Makeup
The choice of your bag for starting school depends not only on how it fits with your outfit, but above all on practical considerations: It should be large enough to offer space for school documents or forms in addition to your personal utensils. A leather shopper or a crossbody bag with lots of storage space are stylish and pragmatic at the same time. This means you have your hands free for the school bag or to take your child by the hand. The make-up depends on the occasion, the time of day and the outfit: subtle and natural or classic.
Tip: Involve your child. Maybe it’s fun to choose your item of clothing or a certain accessory together with mom.
Our outfit recommendations for you as a mom
► Nice & easy: midi dress with denim jacket & wedges
A printed midi dress is the basis for a harmonious outfit for moms when they start school. Stylish yet not pretentious – and a relaxed style in cooler temperatures with white sneakers and a classic denim jacket.
► Chic: skirt with T-shirt & ballerinas
We love skirts and the combination of a skirt and a T-shirt or long sleeve is also suitable as an outfit for school. The recommendation: Choose a simple shirt without any bold statements and keep your look more minimalist. A clean white or black top and a stylish patterned skirt are perfect.
► Confident: Palazzo pants with blouse & block heel sandals
The pants clearly set the tone here. Thanks to its casual cut, it doesn’t restrict you in any way. In combination with a plain blouse and light heels, a special look is created. For all mothers who want to add a personal touch and still appear stylish.
► The classic: long-sleeved top, jeans, blazer & mules
A particularly elegantly patterned long-sleeved top goes particularly well with simple combination partners. This makes it the perfect basic for you to quickly conjure up an outfit. Paired with trendy French style blue jeans, a print top simply looks good. You can create a harmonious finish with a blazer.
► Individual: Jumpsuit & Sneakers
Simply well dressed. Yes, it’s true, a one-piece always makes a statement and is still comfortable and wonderfully unobtrusive. As a Modern Mummy, you don’t have to worry for a second about your clothes on the day your child starts school. Relaxed – and an absolute style match with sneakers.
