These leading ladies are all living proof that women over 50 can rock a wide range of chic hairstyles. Still, cutting it all off is so liberating, and your 50s are just the right time to try out a new, short, and contemporary product.
Whether you have wavy, coarse, curly, fine or straight hair, there is definitely a neckline for you. We spoke with Sanda Petrut, professional hairstylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, and Savannah St. Jean, owner of Savannah Rae Beauty, to find out the best short haircuts and styles for women over 50.
“Short haircuts are easy to maintain and can be designed for any woman, regardless of her lifestyle, face shape, or hair texture and density,” says Petrut. “Chopping your hair can be liberating, and the right cut can complement the features you want to highlight.”

Ellen’s disheveled, dirty blonde pixie exudes an effortless, cool look and feel. Keep it sleek by going over it with a hair straightener or finger comb for a more textured style.

Subtle layers add a new dimension to this short haircut for older women, as demonstrated by actress Emma Thompson. “The layers are easy to style and add lots of velvety texture, while the bangs frame the eyes and emphasize the cheekbones,” notes Petrut. St. Jean adds that a light wax-based texturizing spray “leaves you moving but gives the piecey look you want to achieve.

Amber Valletta offers a fresh take on the pixie with a long, blunt fringe. A little hair behind the ears gives it a youthful vibe that works at any age. Pair it with a fun hair accessory like a headband to amp up the girly feel.

A modern take on the classic pixie, a pulled back version gives off a sophisticated feel. The slight volume at the front is cool and edgy, but not overly so. For extra protection, spritz some hairspray to ensure it stays in place

Soft bangs can freshen up even the dullest of haircuts, as they add lightness and dimension all at once. If you want to accentuate your eyes like Helen Mirren, opt for a cut that sweeps downward to draw instant attention.

J. Lo’s Piece ‘Do is an effortless look that works beautifully on a variety of ages and face shapes, both day and night. The layers collapse together and a middle section keeps it polished.

Journalist Alina Cho’s classic bob is both sophisticated and elegant, making a statement no matter your age. Change the feel by curling your ends or keep the ends pulled down for a soft, feminine look.

“This is a great haircut for women with different textures (straight, wavy or curly) and different densities (from fine to thick hair),” explains Petrut. “It offers plenty of versatility – from conservative to messy – and can also be ironed flat to bring out the richness and texture at the ends.”
