Flash rust can form when a metal surface comes into contact with oxygen and humidity after cleaning, sandblasting or washing. As a result, yellow-orange oxidation products based on iron hydroxide (also called flash rust) are formed. While this oxidation is not particularly difficult to remove, if it remains on the surface, the rust becomes more difficult to remove. In the following article, we explain how to quickly and easily remove rust film.

What happens if you don’t remove rust film?
Flash rust is the first thing that affects the overall appearance of your vehicle and makes it appear unclean and neglected. Most often, corrosion occurs on painted areas and exposed metal elements such as the hood, doors, and trunk. Prolonged rusting can compromise the structural integrity of metal parts. This jeopardizes the safety and performance of your vehicle.
Rapid changes in temperature (both in summer and in winter) often lead to the formation of condensation and therefore water accumulation on the surface of the vehicle (including bicycles and engines). If your car is left outside for a long time, rust often forms on some spots. It is therefore important that you do something about it before it is too late.

Can you remove rust film?
The short answer to the question sounds: Yes! Whether you use home remedies or specialist shops, you can also remove rust on your own. What do you need for this?
- Soft, clean microfiber rags
- Rust Removal Solution
- Soft bristle brush
- Fine grit sandpaper
- car wax or car polish
Step 1:
Wash the car, or at least the affected areas, with soap and water and dry it completely. This way you will be sure that no further rust film will form.
Step 2:
Spray a rust removing solution on the damaged areas. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and leave the solution on for the recommended amount of time. Most of these products are quite aggressive and can further damage the surface. Once the solution dissolves the rust, it will be easier to remove.

Step 3:
Lightly remove the rusty spots with a soft bristle brush. Be careful not to scratch the paint or clear coat. You can also use an old toothbrush here.
Step 4:
If the rust stains are more stubborn or long-standing, use fine-grit sandpaper to thoroughly sand the affected area. Sanding will help remove rust residue and smooth the surface. Don’t be too aggressive, so you don’t damage the paintwork.

Step 5:
After brushing and sanding, rinse the area thoroughly with clean cold water and dry with a rag. To protect against rust film, you should use a car wax or a sealant. This creates a barrier that protects the metal from moisture and environmental influences.

For an even better result, mix the essence with vegetable oil (preferably not olive oil) in a ratio of 1:1 and treat the affected area with it. The mixture needs to act for 3-4 hours before you thoroughly clean it. Just make sure that the car is in the shade (preferably in the garage).

Cola is much more than just a refreshing drink. More and more people are using it as a home remedy for clogged drains or for cleaning. Coke can also be of use when you need to remove flash rust. How exactly does this work? Because cola is rich in phosphoric acid, the rust film is removed. What do you need for this? Soak a ball of foil in about Coke and rub the affected area in a circular motion without pressing too hard. To increase the effect, you can mix in some lemon juice because the acid will remove rust film.
Important! Use aluminum foil ONLY on unpainted areas!

If the rust spots are too large, you can also use paint cleaner or car polish. Apply a small amount to a microfiber cloth and use it to wipe the affected areas without pressing too hard on the paint or scratches will result. Another means with which you can effectively remove rust film is cleaning kneading. Make sure that no small particles such as sand or pebbles get onto the putty. You can damage the polish.
