Is there anything more practical than a shoulder bag? It is the perfect companion for shopping trips or short excursions. A special eye-catcher is the bag below – self-sewn from a cool fabric with a graphic pattern. It comes from the book “Sewing Trendy Bags – Simple Shapes for Beginners”, which was recently published by Christophorus-Verlag. In cooperation with the publisher, we can show you today how you can sew this shoulder bag. You will receive the pattern as a free download.
But that’s not all: we’re giving away five copies of the book! You can find out how you can take part in the raffle in the blog article below. At this point, many thanks to Christophorus-Verlag and the author for the great cooperation.
Sewing trendy bags – simple shapes for beginners
First a look at the book. “Sew Trendy Bags” was published this summer and offers 96 pages of instructions and patterns for all kinds of bags – large and small, practical, stylish and even extravagant. There is a suitable model for every occasion. A practical beach bag, ideal for a day by the sea. Or the felt basket, perfect for shopping or a weekend trip. The quilted bag is a timeless classic that combines elegance and functionality. For slightly longer trips, the backpack is the best choice. A stylish clutch is suitable for special occasions or events. And to organize the bag contents, we recommend the practical bag organizer.
Everyone will find what they are looking for in this book. Many models have simple shapes and are therefore also suitable for beginner sewers. In addition to the detailed and easy-to-understand sewing instructions, the book contains a sewing ABC, which offers additional help when sewing bags.
Does that sound exciting to you? Then hop over to the Christophorus-Verlag website:

Sewing instructions shoulder bag in a retro look
1. For the parts for the outer pocket, iron the volume fleece on the front and back, as well as the saddle pad insert on the bottom (always leave seam allowances free).
2. Place the front and back of the outer pocket right sides together and stitch the side seams (1 cm seam allowance).
3. Divide the outer edge of the base part into four equal sections: First fold the base in half lengthwise, then fold it in half again crosswise. Always make a small nip (5 mm) with scissors at the fold breaks. Also quarter the lower edge of the outer pocket: use the side seams as marking points and place a small clip halfway between them.
4. Pin the bottom, right sides together, to the bottom edge of the outer pocket so that the markings meet and sew in with a 1 cm seam allowance.
5. Sew the lining like the outer pocket, but leave a turning opening of approx. 15 cm on one side seam.
6. Turn the outside pocket right side out. Fix the webbing from the right within the seam allowance with a seam on the outer pocket (see pattern), making sure that the webbing does not twist.
7. Insert the outer pocket into the lining, right sides together, and sew the upper edges (including the strap edges) together with a 1 cm seam allowance. Turn the entire bag right side out using the turning opening, then put the lining inside out into the outside pocket. Fold the seam allowances of the turning opening to the inside. Stitch the top edge of the pocket all the way around.
8. Attach the Color Snap in the middle of the upper edge of the bag and 3 cm below it as a fastener according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Tips
Sewing tip: To prevent the lining from coming out when using the bag, stitch it through the bottom seam with a few small hand stitches on the side, from the inside to the outside and back,
fix.
Material tip: Always iron on inserts and fleeces according to the manufacturer’s instructions – you can find them as quick instructions printed on the edge or in the product information on the Internet.
