Even if a stud book for the wedding is not mandatory, it is nevertheless very nice to have all the important documents bundled in one place. But what size should the studbook be? Classic in DIN-A5, or would you prefer DIN-A4?
At our own wedding, we bought the register directly from our registry office. Between the many different but rather “old-fashioned” studbooks, we discovered a really nice copy, as you can see on the cover photo of our article Studbook for Weddings: Pretty & Cheap on Amazon.

What size for the stud book?
Family books are available in three different sizes:
- in classic format
- in DIN A5
- in DIN A4
We had bought our own family book in DIN-A5 format directly from the registry office. Almost all sheets are in the classic format, which is a bit smaller than DIN-A5. Only the excerpt from the marriage register was in DIN-A4. But this is folded in such a way that it fits perfectly into the book and is in no way disturbing.
Before you buy a stud book, ask your registry office in which size the documents are issued. Some registry offices already create them in DIN-A5, others also in DIN-A4. So there is no uniform standard. Some registry offices even issue the documents in the desired size, but this will probably remain a rarity.
Incidentally, the documents in the classic format fit in a DIN-A5-sized log book. This allows for equal ring spacing for tacking. We therefore recommend that you buy at least this size so that you can later also easily accommodate documents in DIN-A4 (folded) if necessary. We would buy the “Paul” stud book in cream beige with the additional stud book extension set ourselves.
Select family book
If we had to decide on a stud book again today, we would follow the specifications of the registry office. If the documents are only in DIN-A5 format, then a master book in DIN-A5. If the documents were only available in DIN-A4, or if we could choose the size, then we would prefer DIN-A4. We would have bought exactly this stud book.
