Summer is just around the corner and since spring has been very warm so far, the flowers and grass are sure to sprout in your garden. If you also have a small herb and vegetable garden, it’s time to get some garden decorations. We’ll tell you how.
The right garden decoration for every garden
Not all decorative items are equally suitable for all gardens. Large and bulky tubs can quickly overwhelm a small garden and garden decorations that are too small get lost in a large garden.
Fortunately, however, there are garden decorations with herb and garden signs that look great in any garden. Because the garden signs are usually in beds and these beds look the same in most gardens. In other words: You are always on the right track with a beautiful, high-quality herb and garden sign. And high-quality is the keyword you should pay attention to. Because you will not enjoy a garden sign of inferior quality for long.
Pay attention to the materials when decorating the garden
Since the beautiful decorative pieces are in the garden for many months (sometimes all year round), you should pay attention to the materials. The quality of the material should be such that it can withstand wind and weather. In summer, the garden decoration has to cope with long-lasting sunshine, while it can be extremely stormy and rainy, especially in spring and autumn. A lot is demanded of the material.
Fortunately, most herb and garden signs are made of weatherproof material that can withstand even the most adverse weather conditions. Of course, when buying, you should keep in mind that no material will forever retain the properties that it has in the store or online store. After a few years at the latest, herb and garden signs made of the most weatherproof materials also have to be replaced.
Plastic and stainless steel are very popular materials for herb and garden signs. And both have advantages.
The advantages of different herb and garden signs
Herb and garden signs made of plastic are considered to be very weather-resistant because the material itself retains its properties relatively well. On the other hand, plastic is – as the name suggests – not a natural substance. And that bothers some garden owners. Which is why they tend to opt for stainless steel. Stainless steel withstands the weather, but changes its appearance over time and is also susceptible to flash rust. For this reason, you should be prepared for your herb and garden signs to rust faster, especially in the vicinity of old railway tracks or metalworking industries.
An alternative to stainless steel – and one that still looks good – are wooden garden signs. They are available in many different designs, sizes and shapes. DIY lovers can also find wooden signs that they can customize to their own whim. Corresponding blanks can be purchased online or in hardware stores. With a little skill, you can conjure up herbal and garden signs that nobody else in the garden is guaranteed to have.
Herb and garden signs for DIY experts
If you are even more skilled with your hands, you can also make all the garden signs for your herb garden yourself. Here, too, there are very different possibilities and, above all, there are no limits to the imagination. That means: just let yourself be inspired and keep collecting new ideas from which you can then make your own garden signs.
Like this idea here:
Small wooden signs are particularly suitable for beginners in the great realm of garden signs. They are quick to make and you usually only need materials that you have at home anyway, or that you can at least get with little effort. And so it goes:
- Get a wooden board and cut it to the size you want your future garden sign to be (alternatively, you can have it cut at the hardware store)
- You will also need a permanent marker that you can use to write on wood. You should also have a pencil and an eraser at hand to outline the writing
- To beautify and weatherproof the garden sign, you then need glaze in a desired color and clear varnish
- The first step begins with sawing the board at the bottom so that it can later be stuck into the ground without any problems. During this step, make sure the tip is not too short. Depending on the length of the garden sign, it can be 15-20 centimeters long. It doesn’t have to disappear completely into the ground later.
The piece of wood can then be painted if you wish. This year, so-called shabby chic is also popular in the garden. Which means that we encounter a lot of white-painted wood. You can do the same with the garden sign. However, part of the hip look is that the color is not applied very carefully – at least it shouldn’t look like it. Therefore, do not paint the garden sign completely opaque, but pay attention to an uneven distribution of the color.
Then comes the writing. If you like, you can make some suggestions for the printout on the PC in advance and play around with them. When you have found the right font, print out the sheet and use it as a template for your garden sign.
Anyone who can do without a template simply paints the desired lettering on the garden sign by hand. In both cases, however, you should draw in pencil so that you can still correct mistakes.
If you like the lettering, you can trace it with a waterproof felt-tip pen.
Finally, clear varnish is applied to the garden sign – and that’s it!
Of course, you can modify this basic form of the herb and garden sign as you wish and easily make your own individual signs. Have fun!
