Germini are a small breed of gerbera that comes from the Asteraceae family. They have their origin in Asia and southern Africa, from there they spread all over the world. Today about 30 species occur in nature, mainly in Africa, Madagascar and in tropical Asia. Most species are found in South Africa, however.

The colorful flowers were discovered by the Dutch botanist Grovonius, who immediately gave them their current name, because they were known as the African aster until the 17th century. In the 18th century, a South African plant dealer found the “Barberton daisy” and gave it to a botanical garden in his country because of its beautiful appearance. A short time later, the first specimen made its way into the royal garden of England and shortly afterwards the first gerberas were registered, described and presented to the public.
