If we asked Gerd Vermöhlen about his favorite flower, the peony would be right at the forefront of the race. He turned his passion for beautiful early summer flowers into his profession and specialized in the production of peonies around 30 years ago.

Now in the second generation, the family business is planting a total of 35 varieties of peonies, such as the ‘Coral Sunset’, which lives up to its name and is presented in all the colors of the sunset, or a beautiful, pale pink blooming ‘Sarah Bernhardt’. Grow on 10 hectares of land Peonies assets a total of 35 different varieties. Around 500,000 stems are produced here every year, 90% of them outdoors and 10% in the greenhouse.

How do peonies grow?

Peonies grow as perennials, as shrubs and as a hybrid of both. at Peonies assets Perennials are used because the shoots do not lignify as they do with bushes, but rather die in autumn and the plants retreat back into the ground. But don’t worry, they will sprout again in the next early summer and will show their full beauty from the end of April. Tip: You should plant perennial peonies rather shallow and shrub peonies deep in mineral, rather humus-poor soil. Fall is the best time to plant peonies.

How big do peonies get?

How big peonies get depends on their growth habit and also on their type and variety. Peony bushes can reach heights of up to 2.50 m, perennials up to 1.30 m. If you want to plant peonies in your garden, it is advisable to plan enough space for them in a sunny to partially shaded place.

In what colors do peonies bloom?

As you probably know, not all peonies are the same. The flower colors of the different varieties cover the entire spectrum from white to yellow, pink and purple to dark red and this diversity makes the peonies so special. The peony variety ‘Coral Sunset’ even changes its color from apricot and pink to cream in the course of flowering. Simply fantastic!

Unfortunately, the peony season is over again from the beginning to mid-July and we have to wait for the next year until our early summer queen is available as a cut flower again. And our peony deal is also coming to an end: The last delivery date for our peony arrangements is July 3rd, 2021.
