Moisture and air play an important role in this

To keep the lettuce fresh for as long as possible, two things are important: moisture and air. Many people believe that the best way to keep lettuce crisp is to seal it in a bag. But this way no air stays in and that is exactly the opposite of what fresh lettuce needs.

In addition to some moisture, lettuce leaves need good airflow to stay fresh. For this reason, restaurants store their salad in special perforated containers that allow air to circulate while the salad is kept in the fridge.

How long can the green lettuce stay fresh and crisp?

While the deaeration will help prevent the oxidation that causes the lettuce to brown, it has nothing to do with keeping the lettuce crisp. As long as you buy fresh lettuce and use it within a few days, you don’t have to worry about oxidation.

This is the best way to keep your salad fresh and crisp

Cut off the end of the stem and separate the leaves.

First step – preparation

Fill the sink (or a very large bowl) with cold water and submerge the leaves in it. Gently wave the leaves back and forth in the water. This allows dirt to sink to the bottom of the sink. Remove the clean lettuce, or empty the bowl and repeat this step if the lettuce is particularly dirty.

Second step – rinsing

Now you need to dry the lettuce. This works best in a salad spinner. But don’t stuff the leaves inside. Cut them in half (or smaller) so you don’t crush them when you put them in the salad spinner.

Step Three – Cut Lettuce Leaves (Optional)

Spin the lettuce until all the water has drained. The leaves will still be slightly damp – that’s exactly what you want, isn’t it?

Remove the basket from the salad spinner and cover the leaves with damp paper towels. Put the basket in the fridge. (You can use a large colander in place of the spinner basket.) Place the basket on a plate to catch the water, but don’t use a bowl. Remember that fresh lettuce needs airflow.

Next step – put the lettuce in the storage box

If the salad is refrigerated for about 30 minutes, it will be crisp and ready to use. You can keep lettuce leaves in the fridge for three to five days and enjoy them fresh and crisp. Wet the paper towels again and again so they are slightly damp, but definitely not soggy.

More tips

Note that this storage technique is the exact opposite of how tossed lettuce is sold at the grocery store. Lettuce comes in either a bag or in one of those plastic bowl containers. Both storage methods do not allow air circulation, which is why this type of lettuce wilts so quickly after purchase.

It’s also worth remembering that bagged vegetables are responsible for a number of foodborne illnesses, so be sure to wash them yourself.

salad dressing

This salad recipe tastes especially good with a savory vinaigrette. However, the following simple vinaigrette recipe is our favorite, although lemon juice can be substituted for the vinegar. A balsamic vinaigrette also goes really well with this salad.

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients in a jar with a tight-fitting lid or small bowl. Cover the jar with the lid and shake or whisk until the ingredients are well combined.

Taste the ingredients and adjust as needed. If the dressing is too sweet, add a little more vinegar or olive oil. If it’s too acidic, add a little more honey or olive oil.

The dressing can be used immediately or stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Season the dressing to your own taste

Extra tips:

The dressing will separate as it stands and the oil may set in the fridge. Let the dressing sit at room temperature until the oil melts, then shake or stir vigorously to combine the ingredients again.

Apple cider vinegar can be substituted with white wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, or red wine vinegar.

So you can store lettuce and enjoy it for a few days. Enjoy your meal!
