The hussar button at a glance
The summer flower from the daisy family is also known as the hussar’s button. This is an annual plant that reaches a height of about 15 to 20 centimeters. The oval-lanceolate leaves of the garden flower are entire and the flowers resemble those of the sunflower.
It’s not called the dwarf sunflower for nothing. The bright yellow flower heads are pleasing to the eye from June to October. Depending on the variety, the plants have a different growth. While some grow bushy-upright, other varieties overhang. The name of the plant comes from the resemblance of the flowers to the buttons of the hussar uniform.
You can use the hussar button to plant or border flower beds. In the bed, the hussar button is often planted together with verbena, bluebells and marigolds. The hussar button can also be used as a balcony plant. This is particularly suitable as underplanting for large tubs. You can combine the plant with petunias, man’s maidens, angel’s trumpets and African lilies. You can use them not only as a container plant, but also as a traffic light plant to transform your outdoor area wonderfully. Wind and rain do not damage the plant.

location and soil
The squirrel’s button (Sanvitalia procumbens) prefers a spot in full sun. He also feels good in a light penumbra with high temperatures. Nevertheless, one cannot count on a rich blossom splendor. The soil must have a high nutrient and humus content. If the summer flower is planted outdoors, the soil must still be permeable and deeply loosened. Heavy clay soil is simply not suitable for the plant.
How to plant the hussar button?
Prepare the plant from mid-March. This must happen at a temperature between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius. Plant out the young plants after the ice saints and after eight to ten weeks you can expect the first flowers. When planting, make sure that there is a distance of 10 to 15 centimeters between the plants. It is also advisable to improve and loosen the soil beforehand with gravel, sand, compost or horn shavings. Group planting is best for these summer flowers.
