Carnations are one of the most popular flowers and are a real classic. Find out more information here!

Botanical name: Dianthus

Genus: Cloves

Plant family: Carnation family (bot. Caryophyllaceae)

Occurrence: Australia
Did you know that carnations have had a high symbolic meaning for centuries? They are a symbol of courage and boldness but also of admiration and love. Its botanical name Dianthus, which it classifies as a genus of plants in the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae), is derived from the Greek name dios anthos, which means “flower of God”.

Truly divine and in many cases also very sensual, is above all the scent of the flower. The German name Nelke originated in the Middle Ages and is derived from the outward resemblance to the dried clove, which in reality is in no way related to it.

Care tips for carnations

Carnations are very easy to care for. All you need when you arrive is a fresh cut. The cut flowers have a long flowering period. If they start to hang a little after a week, cut them again. Make sure you don’t have the cloves standing near ripe fruit. Carnations are very sensitive to ethylene gas and therefore wilt very quickly.
