Delicately scented freesias are an eye-catcher in every flower vase. Find out more information about the delicate flowers here.

Botanical name: Freesia

Genus: Freesia

Plant family: Iris family (bot. Iridaceae)

Occurrence: Africa

The freesia (bot. Freesia) are a genus of plants from the iris family (bot. Iridaceae). They are beautiful, slim and enchant every room with a fresh look and a delicate floral scent.

The delicate flowers are named after the researcher and doctor Friedrich Heinrich Theodor Freese, who lived in the 19th century. Nowadays there are around 100 different types of freesia. Their color palette ranges from white, pink and yellow to purple. There are also filled varieties and even multicolored freesias.

The mixture of lovely charm and graceful class that they exude is fascinating. Nevertheless, the lily plant looks young and fresh, as if it had just begun to conquer the world of flowers for itself. The freesia owes this not least to its fine fragrance, which is sometimes reminiscent of lilacs, sometimes roses or lemons.
In over a hundred years, breeders have created this wide range of seductive charms from just a few species. The original homeland of the freesias is South Africa, where they sprout from pea-sized tubers from September onwards and sprinkle the steppes with bright colors.

Care for freesias

The freesia maintenance is relatively easy. Freesias should be watered regularly in the bed, but if possible only the soil and not the entire plant. This is especially true for the flowering period from July. In the vase they should also be cut every third, combined with a water change.
