You have probably come across the Fairtrade seal in the supermarket more than once. You can often find it on coffee, tea, or chocolate packaging. We are pleased to also be able to offer Fairtrade flowers in our online shop. If you order an arrangement with the Fairtrade seal, you can be sure that strict social, ecological and economic criteria are adhered to in the cultivation of cut flowers.
Our arrangements “Time for You”, “Kind regards”, “For You” and “Great Joy” come from the Kenyan Siraji Farm. In the agricultural sector, cut flower production is the second largest source of income in Kenya after tea and is therefore of great importance for the country. The conditions around the Mount Kenya massif are ideal for growing cut flowers, as the altitude and rainfall make the soil fertile.
Two other flower farms are connected to the Siraji flower farm, whose employees receive fair pay, protective clothing, paid vacation and social security. The farms also receive a Fairtrade premium, which the employees decide how to use together. This can be used to finance community projects such as the construction of schools or hospitals, thereby significantly improving the living conditions of the people who live there.
On the farm on the Mount Kenya massif, the focus is on empowering women, among other things. For example, the company gives single mothers a perspective by offering them jobs and further training opportunities, while their children can attend school free of charge.
In addition to social factors, ecological factors are also important. Strict environmental criteria apply to the farms. The protection of natural resources such as water and environmentally friendly cultivation play an important role here. In addition, the use of dangerous pesticides and genetically modified seeds is prohibited on the Fairtrade farms. If you would like to find out more about the Siraji Farm and fair cut flower production, just have a look at the Fairtrade Germany website. With a Fairtrade arrangement, you are definitely not only doing something good for yourself or the person you want to give, but also for the people who work on the flower farms.
