Milky star is a delicately scented and decorative flower that will make your flower vase shine! Find out more information here!
Botanical name: Ornithogalum
Genus: Milky Stars
Plant family: Asparagaceae (bot. Asparagaceae)
Occurrence: Europe, West Asia and Africa
The Milky Star (Ornithogalum) is a delicately scented and decorative flower that impresses above all with its petals, which are artfully combined to form a star-like structure. The flower is also known under the name Star of Bethlehem, because the Milky Star was mentioned in the Bible.
Milky stars were sold in the former Israeli capital Samaria and fetched quite high prices. A story in the Bible about famine during a siege of the city says: “In the enclosed city there was a great famine, so that the head of a donkey cost eighty silver shekels and a quarter of a milk star cost five silver shekels.” 6.25).
A little caution should, however, be required when handling the cut flower. The milk star contains numerous cardenolides, especially in the onion. But since we send it as a cut flower without an onion, its toxicity is only low. As with all other cut flowers, we advise against consumption here.
