I love babies! Although I may prefer their variation, Mary Janes with a high heel!
Anyway, they are both adorable and typical of this Parisian chic that we are envied around the world!
You can still see them at the feet of schoolgirls, but they have come back to the forefront from Dior to Chanel during the shows on the catwalk or in the front row! This testifies to a strong comeback of a trend but which will always remain timeless.
What is the Babies shoe? It is a low-heeled shoe (kitten heel type up to a medium-sized heel). It sports one or more flanges on the top and is generally round toe! It’s the perfect shoe for walking and going out!
Did you know ? Babies, fitted with a strap around the instep and closed by a buckle or a button, appeared at the beginning of the 19th century. Originally worn by both boys and girls, their perception has evolved over the years. In the United States, from the 1930s, and in Europe in the 1940s, they were associated more with girls. Moreover, these shoes were also very popular with women in the 1920s.

Babies interpreted by Dior!Of course, the trend having appeared as usual on the haute couture fashion shows, the luxury brands were the first to seize it! At the head of the line we find Dior!
Thus we could see models of babies in the collections of luxury brands! From Gianvito Rossi to Manolo Blahnik via Reformation there is something for everyone!
You will find flat or heeled babies, one or more straps. There are even models with dizzying platforms that I like much less personally…
Babies for all, even at low prices!
Of course when a trend is very strong, it goes down to the streets and is available at all prices! Thus it becomes accessible to all.
On the other hand, astonishment, the babies have slightly changed in pace while lowering in price. Indeed, there will be fewer thin models and many more platform models.
On the material side, it is the varnish that takes pride of place. We also have a dominant black color without surprise.
The advantage of the babies trend is that it can be worn in winter as well as in summer. Just opt for lighter colors for sunny days and favor the slingback variant (my favorite).
Either way, babies are the shoe trend this year, Vogue has even endorsed them as the chicest shoe trend of 2023!
