Family – five of us traveling in the Volvo V90 Recharge

On the road in the Volvo V90 Recharge

Even though it’s been a while now, I would still like to tell you that we were traveling as a family in the Volvo V90 Recharge. No, we didn’t go on vacation with him, but rather subjected the hybrid model to everyday testing for two weeks and went on a few trips with him.

When I first looked at the Volvo, I immediately thought again: “Oh, I like it!” As with the last Volvos that we were allowed to test (read here), this time I immediately liked this simple, inconspicuous, but elegant design. It appears powerful, but unobtrusive.
Similar to furnishings or clothing, the Swedes simply have a way of being absolutely stylish, without exaggerating, but rather impressing with clear lines and just that touch of elegance.
If I were to buy the car, the exterior color would probably be black or white, but it would also be an absolutely stylish car.

Apart from its appearance, I felt immediately comfortable when I got in and drove off.

Despite its enormous length (almost 5m) and its weight, it was easy to drive, extremely easy to steer and maneuvered really well into any parking space. My feeling was: you just roll along the streets in a relaxed manner, no matter how bumpy they are.

When I opened the test car, I initially gasped slightly because light gray fabric seats are not entirely compatible with three children. But in the end, Volvo probably understood the interior design as a whole, because the Scandinavian character came to the fore here too. As expected, colors and materials were carefully put together and coordinated. I said yes, get in and feel good. The seats were so comfortable, the navigation and sound system were easy to use and self-explanatory. What is particularly worth emphasizing – the space! On one trip I sat in the back of the middle to separate the arguments. Even I, at 1.82 meters, really had space and legroom. Definitely a car for families with three children.
We all particularly liked the huge panoramic roof, especially the children of course.

The Volvo V90 Recharge was my first point of contact with electric mobility. In this case as a hybrid that pairs the conventional combustion engine with electromobility. Unfortunately, I discovered that in practice we were far from achieving the electric range officially stated by Volvo. After a visit to my parents (less than 40km) it was over, despite the absolutely calm driving style.
I don’t want to start a discussion about hybrid drives, but I have to say, I was disappointed here. Given the need to use the combustion engine quite early on and the low electrical capacity, I don’t see any real contribution to climate protection.

Charging wasn’t easy here in rural areas either. If you finally found a charging station, a coffee break or even a meal break with children was definitely not enough. We drove to the charging station at 2:30 p.m. and were told that the charging process would end at 10:00 p.m. The plug-in hybrid will probably hang on the cable for up to eight hours until it reaches full range again. So it was difficult for us to manage without our own charging facility, so we ended up driving with gasoline.

Family car

Clearly a Volvo V90 is a family car. The space is enormous, and the trunk also offers plenty of storage space. Thanks to the “easy and simple driving” and the simple operation of all the functionalities in the interior, you arrive safely and can even ignore the children arguing in the back seat for a while. Looks, design and driving pleasure are convincing. Certainly a pleasant travel companion for long journeys.

It’s just a shame that the electric range is so short and there is no option for quick recharging. I was still reluctant to give it away, but perhaps a fully electric, fast-charging model could convince me more of electromobility.
