Make quick tarte flambée toast yourself

Most people know tarte flambée as a crispy flatbread from the oven. But today you’ll get to know tarte flambée in a different way, namely as delicious tarte flambée toast! I’ve been meaning to make this snack for years and now it was perfect when all the leftovers in the fridge needed to be used up just before the holiday. That’s why I used spring onion instead of chives at the end. I just didn’t have any chives left.

There was also a raw broccoli salad and it was not just a small snack, but a filling lunch.

Today I would definitely like to recommend the great recipe to you, read it for yourself and be surprised at how quickly and easily you can prepare Alsatian-style tarte flambée toast and what ingredients you need.

Ingredients for the quick tarte flambée toast:

So today we’re having Alsatian-style tarte flambée toast. This variety with crème fraîche and diced ham tastes particularly delicious and is considered a real original from France. In principle, you need very similar ingredients for the crispy toast bread:

  • toast
  • Crème fraîche and sour cream
  • salt and pepper
  • smoked diced ham or bacon
  • Onion
  • some grated cheese
  • chives

The amount of ingredients depends somewhat on how many slices you want to eat, are you making the dish for the whole family? As a side dish or a full meal?

I always allow for two slices of toast per person if it’s a main meal with a side salad or something similar.

Tarte flambée toast

The right toast bread for tarte flambée toast:

In fact, you can use almost any type of toast for this recipe, including mixed bread or even grain bread, brown bread and dry slices of bread. I always use whole grain toast (Swedish toast from Pagen) because the slices are so nice and big. The Swedish toast can also be toasted well. Because that’s important for crispy tarte flambée toast. The amount of cream is enough for 2 large slices of “sandwich toast”.

The right cheese for your tarte flambée toast:

The topping of the toast is also crucial for the taste. In the Alsatian version, this consists of a white cream, ham and cheese. For me, Emmental cheese has the perfect flavor. Many people like to buy it in one piece and then rub it fresh over their toast. I like it uncomplicated and will use the already grated cheese – we also have a bag of it in the freezer. Alternatively, Gouda or mountain cheese taste good.

The right ham for tarte flambée toast:

The Alsatian tarte flambée includes spicy diced ham. Here I recommend lean bacon, as it not only has a delicious taste, but also becomes nice and crispy in the oven. The finer the ham is diced, the finer your tarte flambée toast will look in the end. If you want to keep the dish vegetarian, you could use a plant-based bacon alternative or tofu.

Tarte flambée toast – a perfect after-work snack:

Especially in the evening after a stressful day at work, things have to be quick and tasty, right? In any case, I often simply don’t have time to stand in the kitchen and cook for long. Then I like to prepare snacks like tarte flambée toast, my perfect after-work snack. Whether as a crispy evening meal, as a main course or as a side dish with salad or soup – tarte flambée toast is always delicious!

Tarte flambée toast on the table in 20 minutes

Crispy, hearty, spicy, good – you can enjoy the delicious taste of tarte flambée toast in just a few minutes. The preparation works super quickly. You just have to follow three steps:

  • Toast the slices of bread briefly in the toaster and meanwhile preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
  • Mix the crème fraîche, sour cream and salt and pepper. Spread a tablespoon on each slice of bread and then spread some ham, onion rings and cheese over it.
  • Bake the whole thing in the oven for about 12 minutes and then garnish your tarte flambée toast with fresh chives or spring onions.

My advice: Tarte flambée toast tastes best hot, so serve the bread immediately after baking. Do you perhaps also know my recipe for baked pretzel sticks? They are just as quick to prepare and just as tasty as tarte flambée toast.
