Coumarin – the dangerous ingredient
Coumarin is one of the reasons cinnamon isn’t all that healthy. This substance is contained in both types of cinnamon, but in much larger quantities in this one from India. That is why there are also certain restrictions in the EU regarding the use of cinnamon per kilo in sweets.
While we’re on the subject, you should know where else the dangerous coumarin is found. In addition to cinnamon, this is also found in strawberries, cherries, lavender and apricots. In very large quantities it is very dangerous. Coumarin thins the blood, and in large amounts can damage the heart. Liver, kidneys are damaged and the nervous system – suppressed.
Sri Lankan cinnamon is healthy for some things that the Indian variety is very bad for. It is the effect on blood pressure that the Sri Lankan variation is capable of reducing.
