Matte makeup is back this year! But rest assured, it has been improved to meet the requirements of 2024.
If you were a teenager or adult between the early 2000s and 2015, you probably have mixed memories of matte makeup. In this (long) period, the latter was on everyone’s faces before being dethroned by its extreme opposite: glowy makeup. And since trends are cyclical and the 2010s are back in fashion, THE Matte makeup is also back. As Val Garland, global artistic director of makeup at L’Oréal Paris, testifies in US Vogue : “It’s about time that matte makeup came back, with that dreamy blurred skin, because it looks good on everyone.”
Unlike glowy makeup, which can tend to mark pores and bring out a shiny side that is not to everyone’s taste, matte makeup seems to suit all skin types. And that’s a great advantage…
Matte makeup: a style that suits all skin types
Oily skin types will surely be the happiest with this return to matte makeup. And for good reason, the latter tends to limit areas of shine, particularly on the famous T zone.
People with acne-prone skin who want to camouflage their imperfections will also be delighted with the return of matte makeup as predicted by Val Garland: “If you have acne or any other skin problem and you like to highlight your glow, you will also highlight your imperfections, while matte makeup can help to camouflage them.”
As for dry skin, rest assured, Today there are products with a matte finish which do not dry out the skin.. And they also do not mark fine lines from dehydration, particularly around the eyes, an area particularly affected by this phenomenon.
Matte makeup has changed a lot in just a few years
Trends come back, but their return always marks a small change which allows them to be dissociated from their elders. This is the case of matte makeup which, instead of being applied to the entire face, will rather be deposited in small touches on specific areas. The goal ? Obtain a minimalist, soft and cloudy finish, far from the heavy and powdery result of the beginning of the 21st century. Xabier Rodrigues Lucena, national artist at MAC, explains to Vogue Us what result to expect from this new trend. According to him, the goal would be to obtain a face “matte in the center and radiant on the sides. In short, makeup that works every day.”
